QUERY: What is the ground state electronic configuration of Mo 3+?
WORKING: Molybdernum, Mo has atomic number 42. Hence 42-3=39 electrons or the equivalent of Yttrium, Y.
So we pass [He] = 1s2 (37 left)
We pass [Ne] = [He] 2s2, 2p6 (29 left)
We pass [Ar] = [Ne] 3s2, 3p6 (21 left)
We pass [Kr] = [Ar] 4s2, 3d10, 4p6 (3 left)
ANSWER: The configuration of Mo3+ is therefore…
…in shorthand: [Kr] 5s2, 4d1
…or in full: 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 4s2, 3d10, 4p6, 5s2, 4d1
…or in principle shell summary: 2.8.18.9.2
Hope that helps!
